It’s exciting to hear from Pamela Polanco this week! Enjoy her devotional post and stop by the contributors page to learn more about her.

Growing up in the Dominican, I remember once wondering where the island was located and how it looked on the map. I knew little about geography, but based on my naïve calculations, it had to be a large place. So, when someone showed me exactly where the island was situated, I was baffled.

“That’s it?” I remember thinking. “Is that all the space we occupy in the world? We are merely a dot on the map!” Funnily, my limited vision failed to factor in the expansive sky and vast universe. If I had done so, I would have assumed that we were smaller than a dot —almost microscopic.

Psalm 8:3-4 says, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”

Indeed, just as I compared a tiny island to the rest of the world and came short, what is man if not a microscopic being when compared not to things created but to the Creator of all things? And who are we to deserve God’s eye on us? The honest answer is that we are nothing and deserve nothing, yet God graciously thinks of us.

God takes pleasure in us –His creatures. We are sought by a God who is indisputably superior to us in all ways. He Who is eternal, holy, immutable, all-knowing, and entirely perfect thinks of us.

Therefore, when we acknowledge who God is and who we are in turn, we should find ourselves amazed by His lovingkindness —astonished by the favors He bestows upon us. We really don’t deserve any of His blessings, and still, He grants us many –such as rest (Matthew 11:28), safety (Psalm 4:8), sustenance (Psalm 145:15-16), forgiveness (Isaiah 43:25), and comfort (2 Cor 1:3-4).

Above that, it is astonishing that He was mindful of us to the point of making His Son like us —becoming man to rescue us. Isn’t it a blessing to know that we are now redeemed through Christ?

Let’s never take for granted that God is mindful of us and involves Himself in our affairs (Psalm 47:8). He is not a God that looks down and does nothing. He is a near God who is active and present in our lives.

He was mindful of us from the beginning of time when He set a redemption plan in motion and is just as conscious and aware of us today.

Let’s rejoice in the fact that He thinks of us —not as a collection of people that He placed somewhere in His creation, but as individual beings. So, let’s praise Him, humble ourselves before Him, and never stop marveling that the Creator of this world is deeply involved in our lives.

See, we deserve nothing from Him… yet God thinks of us and gives us everything through Christ.
