“Are you trusting, or are you trying?”  When my husband was a young boy, his dad called him into the house and asked him this question, a question meant to help him gain perspective.  Over the years, that question has been repeated in our home, causing me to reflect upon how often I tackle issues with my human efforts.

Every day we encounter circumstances that can overwhelm us because we press forward in our “trying” rather than “trusting” the Creator of the universe to shoulder our cares.  Honestly, in my trying, I find myself worn out – frustrated and feeling hopeless – because I’m incapable of solving every situation that arises.  I’m human. He’s divine.  I need Him – a lot!

Trusting with all our heart proves to be hard work some days, for we too often think we can handle the situation if we lean on our own understanding. Trust God and let go of the control?  Nope!  Not today.  We have this under control.  And yet we do not.  And so the fretting, stress, and frustration grow because we choose to keep trying with our own efforts.

Though my father-in-law is now in Heaven, his question to John frequently echoes in my mind as I find myself once again trying rather than trusting.  But you know what?  We’re one choice away from changing that exhausting habit.  One choice.  One.

Are you trusting, or are you trying?  It’s a question worth answering.
