What does it mean to leave your first love? Have you felt overwhelmed, distant, and spiritually dry in your walk with Christ recently? Every prayer, every devotion, or time put aside to be with Him is rushed and unfulfilling?

Sure, you know the right things to do and wouldn’t dare walk away from Him; for you have experienced His goodness, and you know well that He is the way. Yet, you’ve found yourself so far from Him while doing the things He’s asked.

Repent. Return to your fist love.

It may seem difficult, hopeless, or impossible even for those who have gotten so busy, so consumed, or even may have backslidden into the sin that so easily besets us. As I write this, the Holy Spirit earnestly pleads inside of me to share the love, grace, and desire that I can’t quite find a word that adequently describes the heart of the Father.

Return to me, my bride; you don’t have to give anything up first; just return. I am your healer, I am your true desire, I am your strength, I am your deliverer; it’s all in me. Return to me, my beloved. I will consume you with my love until all priorities are in the correct order, until sin has no place in your heart, until your identity is completely found in who I am.

Recently, I have been faced with the truth that I had left my first love. My studies and motherly duties consumed me, and I rushed through every prayer, bible reading, and good work the Lord called me to. I was completely overwhelmed. The Lord led me to take a semester break, slow down in the house and put HIM first.

I had to repent. He didn’t shame me, but the shame I experienced is unmatched. I remember all He’s done, and I shutter at the thought of how I left His presence and tried to continue His purpose for me without His strength.

His solution is simple for those who have left their first love. Repent. Return. There is no long, drawn out ritual, prayer, or shameful cloud you need to do or put on. Beloved, return. Just return. Abba is there waiting, if just only your heart will heed His voice and simply return. Be blessed, healed, made new, and filled in Christ Jesus.
