Renewed Minds
BTS. K-Pop. K-Drama. K-Beauty. Gangnam Style. Squid Game. Latest trends so palpable, you can’t go so far as to hold a conversation without being bombarded with the new Korean fad and trend.
Korea is praised as a country brimming with all things glamorous: fashion, beauty, and entertainment, even luxuriating as the home of the world’s most popular entertainers.
This glamor and excitement promises one self-worth and maybe even some confidence. It couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Korea holds the highest suicide rates among OECD countries. As Korea legalized abortion in 2020, just last year alone, over one million babies were murdered. Tragically, Korea now boasts highest abortion percentage among OECD countries and ranks first for DUI’s in Asia alone.
This Korea, though portrayed as a glamorous hub of fashion, entertainment, and technology, is, in fact, writhing in pain, shame, and utter darkness. Korea has fallen prey to the world’s distorted views of self-worth. So much for glamor and confidence.
But wait, we, too, can be deceived. Many of us believe that our self-made confidence will insure us from failure. From pain. From shame. From darkness. So many of us are afraid that our confidence-well will dry up.
Romans 12:2, however, guides us to a better direction: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
God clearly instructs us not to be conformed to the world’s philosophy. This means we must learn how to discern between the good and the bad. He warns us to guard our hearts “with all diligence” (Proverbs 4:23). Guarding requires acts of constant shielding and protecting; passively letting our guards down will reap many bitter consequences.
We must daily renew our minds, flooding our thoughts with that which honors God. This should always be a priority. Philippians 4:8 shows us specifically the thoughts that honor Christ: honesty, justice, purity, loveliness, good report, virtue, and praise.
Let’s renew our minds with Truth today.
