For as long as I can remember, my parents shared Bible stories with my brother and me about our faithful God.  On many occasions, they would sit us down and tell us how He’d been faithful to our family, making certain that we knew He was a personal God Who cared about us and was always there for us.

Sunday school lessons, church sermons, Bible verses, and hymns, reinforced the biblical truths taught in our home, filling my young mind with concrete examples of our God’s faithfulness.  So many people poured time and energy into my life to ensure I knew God loved me and would never leave me.

One of my favorite Sunday school lessons was about Queen Esther.  I never tired of hearing how she went before the king, risking her life to save her people, but what struck me the most was hearing how faithful her God was.  Not only did He physically protect her, but He also miraculously saved the Jews, paving the way for Jesus to come into the world, die on the cross, and save people from their sin.

Oh, and then there’s Psalm 23:4 – one of the first verses I memorized. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”  I didn’t realize it then, but the concrete truth of that verse would bring me comfort and confidence during some dark times in my life.  Dark times force us to transition from verse memory to verse application, don’t they?

Of course, hymns held a special place in church and at home.  One of my favorites rests in these words: “Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father/There is no shadow of turning with Thee/Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not/As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.”  I’m thinking you, too, have childhood melodies etched in your memory that the Holy Spirit brings to mind at just the right time.

You know, as I’ve grown up and encountered doubts, failures, and challenges, I’ve found Him faithful in every season of my life – faithful to reassure, faithful to forgive, faithful to comfort, faithful to simply remind me to keep my eyes and heart on Him rather than on others or my own efforts. His faithfulness is there for us regardless the circumstance, and He desires that we experience it personally.

I’m so grateful for godly parents that showed me firsthand about our faithful God.  I’m so grateful for Bible stories, sermons, verses, and hymns that continue to remind me of our faithful God.  Most of all, I’m grateful that I’ve personally experienced His faithfulness. You have those moments, too, don’t you?  Moments in your life that clearly point to our faithful God.

How exciting to contemplate the reality that we serve the same God as Esther!  We serve the same God that David speaks of in Psalm 23, and we serve the same God Whose faithfulness is heralded in so many lovely hymns, a God who “changest not . . . thou forever will be.”

Even when we’re not faithful, He is.  Even when we falter, He does not.

Today, I find myself so very grateful for my faithful God.
