When my husband and I traveled on deputation, he always looked forward to “returning” home. Whenever we arrived back in Maryland, he felt a deep sense of familiarity and safety with his surroundings. He could turn off the GPS since he was very accustomed to the roads; it was evident to me that he knew the place. Likewise, whenever I read Psalm 90, I get the idea that the psalmist is deeply acquainted with God.

The psalmist says, “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations” (Psalm 90:1). While short, this verse contains such a riveting statement. If we look at the verb tense here, we can clearly see that at some point past, God had become His people’s place of residency —their haven. The verse also shows that the action stated here has no ending point —the Lord will remain to be His people’s safe place in all generations.

God’s people found a place in Him not only through bondage, desert-wandering, captivity, disobedience, judgment, and scarcity but also through their conquests and prosperity. They had a permanent residence in God –in spite of their circumstances. In all generations. Through all seasons.

This verse reminds us that we can find refuge in God’s presence. The psalmist is confident He can draw near God, and he professes his certitude in the fact that God has always allowed His people to find shelter in Him. Since there is no ending to the action of dwelling, we can have no doubts that the Lord will continue to offer His people a place in Him.

Similar to the Israelites, as born-again believers, we can find a resting place in God during trials, defeats, and suffering, just like we can do in seasons of victories and success.  We need to trust that God is as present in our tribulations as He is in our triumphs. He walks the promising and the challenging journeys alongside us just the same —He is our dwelling place.

Sometimes we might feel like we can only approach Him during a certain season of life, but the truth is that He desires us to look for Him continually. He wants to be the place where we come to find rest at the end of the day but also the place where we find refreshment and hope every morning. He wants to safeguard us under the threshold of His mercy daily. Friend, let me motivate you to draw near Him for refuge. He is there for all seasons —in all generations. Let us find hope knowing that the Lord of heaven is our dwelling place.
