Recently, one of my elderly extended family members had to be moved into a retirement home because she could no longer care for her sprawling house. As relatives were sorting through her belongings, they discovered drawers upon drawers full of designer clothing items, many with tags still attached.

There were cabinets full of glassware and collectors’ items which she ordered from catalogues over the years. Dozens of boxes were packed up and donated to a local thrift store. Antiques and other valuable items were sold.

This relative had believed the lie: “Just one more item will satisfy me.” As Proverbs 27:20 reminds us, “Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.”

I have found myself at different times thinking, “If I could just get new Christmas decorations this year, I would be truly happy,” or “I just need a few new pairs of sandals for the summer and then my wardrobe will be complete.”  “If I could just have a new couch like the one I saw on Instagram, then my house will be done.”

The funny thing is, when I’ve actually acquired some of these things, they have never satisfied like I thought they would. Items that we dream of owning and work hard to purchase will likely end up in a dumpster within a few decades.

If we keep the proper perspective, we will find our worth not in material possessions, which never satisfy, but in Christ.
