We’re thrilled to have Pamela Polanco share devotional thoughts with us this week! If you’d like to learn more about her, just stop by the contributors page.

Recently, I was on the phone with my grandmother. She struggles to remember most things because of her Alzheimer’s.  Over the last couple of months, I have shared repeatedly the news of my first pregnancy with her. Sometimes, I tried to avoid the topic since it didn’t feel like something she would remember long-term.

Surprisingly, on one of our latest calls, she asked me, “Pame, did I dream it, or are you expecting a baby?” I was so impressed that I eagerly shared it all with her again. And once more, she rejoiced as if it was the very first time she had heard of it.

Sometimes, it’s hard to hear my grandmother repeat information; it certainly makes my heart ache for her. But when it comes to good news, it’s so sweet and even encouraging to hear her celebrate time and time again. Her praise to the Lord for what He has done is as enthusiastic as if she were hearing it for the first time.

This occurrence has touched my heart in many ways. For once, how often do I thank the Lord for His benefits with the excitement and thanksgiving of a fresh, answered prayer? How many times do I stop to rejoice time and time again over what He’s done in my life? Not nearly enough, surely.

Psalm 44:8 tells us, “In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.” At the start of this Psalm, the writer recalls God’s past deeds, just as he does in other Psalms. Even in times of great trouble, he could pause and rejoice in what God had already done. This verse, in particular, should encourage us to continuously boast about God and praise His name daily with unwavering enthusiasm and gratitude.

Undoubtedly, finding joy in God’s blessings again and again keeps our hearts grateful and reverent. It turns our daily lives into a constant celebration of His grace and mercy. Just like my grandmother’s joy each time she hears about my pregnancy, we should approach God’s blessings with fresh wonder and appreciation.

We should keep the same excitement and gratitude as we did when we first experienced His goodness. Whether it’s an answered prayer, a received blessing, or simply His constant presence in our lives, let each memory be filled with that same enthusiasm and thanksgiving.

Friend, we should make it a daily practice to recall His deeds and celebrate them with the same vigor as if it were the first time we experienced His gracious hand in our lives.
