Relevant. This word often drives our thinking, leading us to seek devotional books, podcasts, blogs, and conversations that address our current needs and satisfy the longing in our hearts.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not against devotional books, podcasts, blogs, and conversations, for God has used those vignettes to fill my heart and my mind with edifying thoughts.
Are those venues relevant to my needs? Sure. Can they direct me to my Bible through their insight? Absolutely!
But here’s what the Lord has reminded me of lately – Can any of those venues be more relevant to my hurts, my questions, my fears, my joy, my uncertainties, my wavering . . . than His Word?
No, they can’t. They can lead me to His Word, but I can’t allow them to replace His Word, for it’s the only resource that’s always current. Always.
Just this past week, He brought to mind verses relevant to my needs:
Lamentations 3:22-23 reminded me that my “Lord’s mercies . . . are new every morning.”
Psalm 27:14 encouraged me to “wait on the Lord: be of good courage” because “he shall strengthen thine heart,” and Psalm 105:1 admonished me to “give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name.”
Am I going to keep embracing my devotional books, blogs, podcasts, and conversations? Yes, for God can use those venues to speak to my heart. But I want to be ever mindful that no source will be more relevant to meeting my every need than God’s Word.
Other resources may point me to His Word, but His Word directly leads me to an intimate relationship with Him as no other.
