“For the Lord is good.” This past week John and I took a road trip, and as we drove, we talked about how good God has been to us over the years. Our conversation led me to ponder the first five words of Psalm 100:5, “For the Lord is good”; and in those contemplative moments, my mind was flooded with memories, memories of how God has been overwhelmingly good to me.
Being adopted, growing up in a Christian home, accepting Christ as my Savior, attending a Christian college, marrying John, having Emma and Elisabeth, attending wonderful churches, making dear friends, living in a safe & lovely home, enjoying fulfilling ministry jobs – these thoughts – and so many more – effortlessly flooded my mind as I pondered God’s goodness in my life.
Now let’s be honest – not every detail of our lives always feels good. Unemployment, moving once again, making new friends, feeling alone, being mistreated, enduring sickness, being separated from those we love . . . Is it possible that even in those miserable, uncertain moments that the Lord is still good? Yes. Yes. Yes. Despite the temporal circumstances, He is good – a steady, fixed, firm steadfast good.
Undoubtedly, life can bring us moments of uncertainty, fear, and doubt, feelings which can shake our foundational beliefs and cause us to forget that the fact that, in the midst ever-changing circumstances, He is still good. Feeling tossed in the wind these days? Guess what? He is still good. And because of His goodness, we can rest in Him, trusting that He will work “all things together for good” in our lives (Romans 8:28).
“For the Lord is good” – How easily our minds can become distracted by the noise around us – but how refreshing it can be to pause and intentionally reflect on those five words!
Our Lord is good! All the time. In every circumstance.
