The book of 1 John has a lot to say about God’s love. We are taught that “God is love” (1 John 4:8), that He showed His love by sending Christ to die for us (1 John 3:16), and that we show that we are His by loving each other well – with deeds, not just words (1 John 3:18).

One of the most precious ways to experience God’s love is through His people. Over and over in my life, the Lord has used dear brothers and sisters in Christ to remind me that my Father knows my needs, sees my tears, and loves me dearly.

Over the past year or so, our family has made a trans-Atlantic move, leaving the mission field of South Africa, where we had served for sixteen years, for a new chapter of ministry in the States. I was feeling very fragile one Sunday in our new church in the States when the Lord sent a dear lady across my path.

She asked sensitive questions and listened to my story for a few minutes. Her eyes glistened as she promised to pray for me and my family, and I knew…that the Lord had sent her that day to remind me that He loved me. I was reassured that He had not forgotten me. If He had gone to the trouble to send a sister to love on me, He would surely provide for my needs and reveal His plan for me in His good time!

Consider for a moment the lady who encouraged me. She was living out the truth of 1 John 4:12 by reaching out to me in love. I can’t see God, but I could see her! Because God is alive in her, He loved me through her.

Isn’t that beautiful? I want to be used that way, too, don’t you? Let’s make this our prayer today – “Lord, please love people through me today. Use me to remind someone that You love her. Perfect Your love in me.”
