Isn’t it wonderful to have friends?  You know – those that we can share our disappointments, fears, and thoughts with, those that we can go to for advice, those that we grab coffee with and laugh with at the silliest of things.  Godly friendship is simply refreshing!

But what about our friendship with our Lord?  “But I have called you friends.” As I pondered Jesus’s declaration in John 15:15, I was smitten by the thought that He desires that I know Him.  The Son of God desires that I – a sinner – come to know Him as my Savior and to know Him intimately.

My greatest Friend desires to know my disappointments, fears, and thoughts and to provide wisdom through His Word.  Now that’s a reason to rejoice, right?  Songs that I grew up singing soon flooded my mind:

“There’s not a Friend like the lowly Jesus:
No, not one! no, not one!
None else could heal all our souls’ diseases:
No, not one! no, not one!”

“What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear.”

“I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,

He’s the fairest of then thousand to my soul.”

What a blessing God has given me to enjoy earthly friendships, to enjoy the laughter, support, and encouragement from those around me!  Yet, He desires that I not forget that He is my greatest Friend, the One Who loved me, gave His life for me, and wants me to draw closer to Him.

Lord, may my greatest desire be,

“Just a closer walk with Thee
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee

Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.”
