The world we live in can often feel like a place filled with despair. From the weight of personal struggles to the overwhelming news of violence, sickness, and injustice, it’s easy to feel like hope is in short supply. Yet, in the midst of this pain, there is a hope that transcends circumstances—a hope that is found in the unshakable love and promises of God.
In 1 Peter 1:3, we are reminded of this living hope: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” This “lively hope” is not like the temporary hope the world offers—a hope that fades when trials come—but is instead a hope that is rooted in the resurrection power of Christ. It’s a hope that cannot be taken away, no matter the darkness that surrounds us.
As Christians, we are called to share this hope with a hurting world. It’s easy to be consumed by the pain and suffering around us, but we are meant to be vessels of God’s light and truth. Jesus says in Matthew 5:14, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” In the same way that a candle can brighten a dark room, our lives—shaped by God’s love and filled with His hope—can shine in the darkness.
We don’t have to look far to see people who need this hope. Maybe it’s a friend facing a painful diagnosis, a neighbor struggling with loss, or a colleague wrestling with loneliness. Whatever the situation, God has called us to bring His hope into those spaces. It might be as simple as offering a listening ear, praying for someone, or reminding him of God’s promises. We are the bearers of the good news that God is with us and that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5, KJV).
One song that beautifully expresses this hope is “It Is Well with My Soul.” The lyrics, “When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul,” echo the peace and hope that come from trusting in God even in the midst of suffering. It’s a powerful reminder that, no matter the storms we face, God’s peace can still reign in our hearts.
In Romans 15:13, Paul writes a prayer over believers: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” This is the kind of hope we are called to share—a hope that fills us with joy and peace, not because our circumstances are perfect, but because we know that God is in control and that He is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
When we share the hope of God, we are offering more than just words—we are offering a life transformed by God’s grace. It’s not always easy to share this hope in a world filled with pain, but God’s Word assures us that He has equipped us. As we look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), we are reminded that our hope is certain and eternal.
Let us be the ones who share the hope found in Christ with a hurting world. Let our words, actions, and prayers reflect the love and peace that only God can give. In a world so desperate for hope, we have the privilege of pointing others to the One who is our Hope, our Savior, and our Peace.
As the hymn says, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness”—and it’s that very hope we are called to share.
