We’re thrilled to hear devotional thoughts from Elisabeth Buono this week! Please take a moment to learn more about her on the contributors page.
As I write this, my husband and I are in the midst of job hunting, excited that he will be graduating from seminary, but not sure what next is going to look like. Uncertainty is not my favorite thing, and it can be easier for me to focus more on wanting to know things will be the way I want them to be than to trust that whatever God opens the door to will be what is best in every way imaginable.
It’s quite silly and honestly totally foolish how often we can think we know better than God. We may not verbalize it like that, but when we live in discontentment at where God has us- thinking more about what we dislike than looking to see what He would teach us and seeking to glorify Him in it; when we worry about things now or in the future- just knowing that if it doesn’t go “just this exact way” we would not be happy or it just wouldn’t be exciting at all; or when we choose to turn to that same sin again… in these moments, we are not setting our gaze on Christ, on the Lord’s character, on His Word, and truly believing that it is what is best.
I want to share a few verses that are part of a truth-packed and beautiful psalm, and I would encourage y’all to read the rest of Psalm 103 if you have a chance to sometime today:)
Ps. 103:1-5 ~
“1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Sister in Christ, The God in control of your life right now is the One Who bought your soul from the power of Hell with the price of the blood of His One and only Son. This is the God Who, while we were completely unable to offer anything good up of ourselves, chose to forgive us of all our sins- past, present, and future- through the salvation made possible through the unbelievably awful death of His precious Son. And not only did this Almighty God save us, but He also continued to shower us with so many good things that we could not list them if we tried.
I do know what each of you reading this is going through in your life. You may be in a “mountaintop” season, and if so, praise the Lord for His goodness! Or you may be in a very difficult season of life, for whatever reasons only you and those closest to you know, and if so…let’s still praise the Lord for His goodness.
His goodness does not change, no matter what else does. He is the One Who rescued our lives from the pit, and He knows what is best to do in our lives and allow in our lives each day. He loved us when we did not even know Him, loved us when we rejected Him, and will never cease to love us every minute of every day for the rest of our lives.
What beautiful truths! What an amazing God! May we all cry out, whether in a joyous shout or through streaming tears, “Bless the LORD, O my soul!”
