Who are You? Why are You Valuable?

We have many identities as women. We are wives, mothers, daughters, friends, employees or employers, ministry leaders or workers, and so much more; most importantly, when we trust Christ as Savior, we are children of God. Understanding who we are and why we are valuable in each of our identities can help us be happy and joyful all of our lives, but especially when we are faced with the trial of an identity crisis.

Maybe you have never faced an identity crisis. I would define the trial of an identity crisis as losing our value in one or more areas of our life, usually because of a change in our identity. These trials can come when a child leaves home, when a loved one dies, when we lose a friendship, or when we lose a job or ministry. There are so many other ways we can face an identity crisis.

When we trust Christ as our Savior, we become a child of God. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” Romans 5:8 tells us that God loves us even though we are sinners. Being created by God in His Image gives us immense value as we see in Psalm 139. Matthew 6:26 and 10:31 tell us that we are valuable to our Heavenly Father–more valuable than the birds who He feeds with care.

In John 15, Jesus calls us friends. Being a friend of Jesus is our true identity. Jesus dedicated His life to bring us eternal joy. He loves us perfectly. There are many promises in the Scripture of Christ’s eternal work in our lives. Philippians 1:6 says that we can be confident that God has begun a good work in us and will perform it until Christ returns. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s workmanship, His masterpiece.

Being a friend of Jesus gives us eternal value in every facet of our lives. We are valuable because He values us. When our life circumstances change and we lose our identity in our earthly relationships, we can have joy and peace knowing that our identity in Christ is eternal and unchanging.

Who am I? I am a friend of Jesus! Why am I valuable? I’m valuable because God says so! Oh, if we could grasp the concept of this eternal truth, the joy and peace that would belong to us, the stability it would bring to our emotions, and the glory our lives would give to God.
